I was born in Houston, Texas in 1971. I attended Cy Fair High School and went on to the University of Denver.
I swam competitively in college for 3 years. After college, I ended up eating and drinking way too much. I completely forgot about swimming or any form of exercise and blew up to over 200 pounds. In 2000, I had a boss named Doug King that took me running. Doug was in his late fifties at the time, and completely destroyed me on my first run. He lectured me hard about being out of shape and at that moment, I made a choice to do something different with myself.
In 2002 I ran my first marathon and during the training lost over 40 pounds. My entire network of friends changed as I started to spend more time running. A good friend of mine, Don Pontes opened up a running store in Rocklin, CA called Running & Racing. Every Wednesday night we would get together and run. The store was more than just a place to sell shoes, it became a place for us to hang out. Through the store, I met some great friends, Matt Schloegel, Michael Woodward, Richard Kane, Vince Hoffart and many more. These friends talked me into buying a bike and becoming a triathlete.
In 2006 I had an opportunity through work to move back home to Houston, TX. This brought us closer to my family and proved to be an awesome change in our lives.
Although the move took me away from my California training partners, I found a new group of people all in love with the sport of triathlon. You will find us out there almost every Sunday on the bikes or hitting the trails early AM during the week.
Countless runs, races, swims and many Ironman’s later, I found myself training for the Ironman World Championship. Now I simply work hard and still find time to train so I can stay healthy and ocassionaly compete.
While working for a great company Atrium Innovations, which owns premiere nutritional supplement brands around the world. We launched Klean Athlete, the first brand focused on the holistic health of athletes. We also are concerned about contamination, and chose to have all our products NSF Certified for Sport©. Klean became the first complete line of athletic nutrition to ever receive the esteemed NSF designation and the official nutritional supplement provide for the Major League Baseball Players Association.
In 2016 I left Atrium to become the G.M. at EAS, a division of Abbott Nutrition. EAS has an amazing 25+ year history and was one of the founders of the modern movement in sports nutrition. Famous for our MyoPlex Original recovery shake and AdvantEdge 100 calorie protein drinks, EAS is available in retail outlets all over the world.
I am blessed to be married to Shani Monk and we have two beautiful children, Hannah and Parker. I am fortunate to be surrounded by friends and family that have supported me through out the years. Including my mom and dad that took me to countless swim practices.
